Falling In is a welcome change from the darkness and broodiness that one gets these days in fantasies written for older youth. Without the burden of emotional angst, juvenile fantasies are free to launch readers into imaginative worlds. Written by Frances O'Roark Dowell, Falling In In is full of whimsy and diverse friendships!

While dropping her son off at his school on a rainy day, Dowell imagined the idea of a girl who discovers a school beneath her school. A few year ago, she decided to write that book. Thus, Isabelle Bean was born.

What a delightful find! Although I grew up reading several books by Eleonor Estes, until recently I hadn’t the pleasure of discovering The Witch Family. This book is a fun blend of imagination and fantasy.

One of the benefits of trying to read books in a variety of categories is that I start noticing age groups and genres which I tend to neglect. Take picture books as an example. So far, I have reviewed three. At the end of this month, I'm taking on a new venture to turn that omission around. I'm starting a before-school reading club for primary students. In it, we're going to read picture books and maybe some chapter books. While waiting for my reading club to begin, I've been reading some of the more popular picture books out there.

I now interrupt my regular schedule to bring you a special interview. As promised, here is my email chat with H.S. Toshack. If you love animal books, and especially if you enjoyed Watership Down by Richard Adams, seek out the Paka Mdogo stories. You will not be disappointed!
