Musings Meme: Current Reads #2

MusingMondaysWhat are you reading right now?
What do you think of it?
Why did you chose it?

Musing Mondays asks one to describe reading habits, talk about book purchases, or to discuss one’s current read. In considering that third question further, I’ve decided that it might be fun to mention books which I read but don’t review for various reasons. For example, Naked Prey by John Sandford is a novel for adults that my husband recommended to me.

He thought I might find the mother of one of the main characters of interest. In his words, she is much worse than the mom I’ve created in my novel. Well, that’s because the mom in Naked Prey is a mean criminal, rather than a perfectionist whose actions border on sadism. You will hate the mom in Naked Prey.

My husband also thought I might like the young girl in Naked Prey. Letty has a drunk for a mom. That can be a fairly typical parent in books I read. However, Letty also knows how to trap and use a gun, skills that some of my previous small town and rural students possessed. She’s also tough, but likes clothes and attention. Interesting combination! So, my husband is right.

The reason I mentioned those two aspects is that they aren’t mentioned in the description on the flap. It talks about Lucas Davenport, a detective turned investigator, who will be familiar to fans of the Prey series. The description also refers to the two bodies found hanging from a tree in the woods of northern Minnesota. You might want to read Naked Prey, if you know Sandford’s books or like crime novels.

As for my impression of Naked Prey, it is about a brutal crime. The worst however happens after the execution. And the murderer(s) grow colder and more vile. Some things I appreciated about Naked Prey were the descriptions of the town and the unexpected twists. I could feel the cold of winter as I read Sandford. In addition, although the identity of the murderer was never really a secret, I didn’t expect some of the other revelations. There are a lot of swear words, and the bad guys left me with a terrible feeling about how malicious and desperate individuals can be, but I’d be open to reading more of Sandford’s books.

What is your current read?

Haven’t read any of this series. Here’s what I’m currently reading: http://daystarz.wordpress.com/2013/03/04/musing-mondays-mar-4/

Thanks for the visit! Enjoy your current read: Mine to Avenge!

I haven’t read any of Sandford’s stuff yet, but I do have a copy of the first book in the Prey series. I’m a definite fan of crime novels so I’m thinking I might be finally picking it up sooner rather than later. Happy Reading!

Let me know what you think. 🙂

“What are you reading right now?” I’ve just finished reading L. D. McCabe’s Divine Nescience and I’m about to read his The Foreknowledge of God. Divine Nescience was written after the Foreknowledge of God to provide an introduction to it. “Nescience” means “ignorance” and “divine nescience” refers to God’s ignorance of the part of the future determined by the free will actions of created beings. Although written in 1878 and 1881, the two books express the views of today’s open theism.
“What do you think of it?” I found Divine Nescience interesting but thought that Chapter XIV, in which McCabe argues for the superiority of Divine Nescience over Calvinism and Arminianism, was too long and that Chapter XVI, the conclusion, claimed too much for Divine Nescience. I won’t be recommending the two books to my family and friends to read because they aren’t as reader-friendly as some of the contemporary books about open theism, such as Clark Pinnock et al’s The Openness of God.
“Why did you chose it?” I chose the two books because I plan to include them in a series of posts in May at my Open Theism blog on books about open theism.

Thanks for sharing! I look forward to reading your Open Theism posts about your current reads.

I have read a few of the Prey series in the past, but sort of gave up on them. Maybe this is one I need to check out.

As my husband is the Sandford fan, I asked him for advice on how to respond. He said the Prey books are all similar. If you didn’t like the earlier ones, you probably won’t like this one either. The series is probably just not your type of fiction. 😦
