Best Friends Book Club

Posted on: March 19, 2013

BestfriendsBookClubRecently, I received a promotional email about a new book review show. Best Friends Book Club is a new book review show for kids aged 11 to 16. The series features four teenage hosts chatting about their favorite books in an unscripted talk show format. In the first season, the Best Friends Book Club will feature the young adult novel The Journeys of John and Julia. The review show is created and produced by the multimedia company, Rigler Creative Solutions.

BestFriendsBookClub_CastGeared toward young adults, the web series consists of 3-to-5 minute episodes, broadcast weekly on YouTube, and started March 16, 2013. During the first batch of episodes, Cam, Melissa, Kailey, and Carly will dig into one book and relate the story to their personal, real-life experiences. They will guide the conversation with each installment and welcome viewers to contribute their own ideas through comments.

The first book being reviewed is The Journeys Of John and Julia. It focuses on teenager Julia, her relationship with her mother, best friend John, and her interactions with a wondrous collective of beings called the Twenty-Two. Here is the first episode

After viewing the first episode, which I have pasted below, I had these three reactions

  • Why is the show aimed solely at girls?
  • Why was a relatively unknown book picked for the first discussion?
  • Why will the girls discuss only one book for an entire season?

And now that you’ve checked out this show, what did you think? Also, if you’ve read The Journeys of John and Julia, what is your opinion of it?
