Musings Meme: Current Reads #4

MusingMondaysWhat are you reading right now?
What do you think of it?
Why did you chose it?

For our fifth anniversary this year, my husband and I exchanged gifts in an unusual way. We each shopped at our favorite place and picked out one item to purchase. My husband, an avid gamer, brought an add-on for The Sims. Me, I bought yet another writing guide.

Writing Irresistible Kidlit by Mary Kole covers all the basics that many of my other guides do. Dedicating a separate chapter to each topic, it talks about how to come up with ideas and how to develop plot and character. In a single chapter, it also explained how to integrate more advanced features such as imagery, word choice, and the all elusive voice. What stood out to me though is two things. First, despite its name (which might suggest picture books or at least books for younger readers), Writing Irresistible Kidlit is mostly about writing for middle grade and young adult readers. Second, Kole cites examples from many current mainstream novels for youth, along with quotes publishers, editors, and authors who offer advice to today’s aspiring children’s authors. I read Writing Irresistible Kidlit over the weekend, figured out new ways to revamp my novel-in-progress, and added several books to my Wish List!
