First time exploring the Northern Peninsula!

Caribou, moose, arctic fox, wild salmon, and humpback whales. Arctic tern, herring gull, spruce grouse, and puffins. These are the wildlife which we saw while travelling up, down, and around the Northern Peninsula in Newfoundland.

Coastal towns (outports) and lighthouses. Bogs, coves, icebergs, limestone barrens, thrombolites, and an underground salmon pool. Blueberries, cloudberries, crowberries, and partridgeberries. These number among the other wonders which we saw on our five-day adventure.

Along our route, I bought a few more books about Newfoundland. My picture book collection has grown again. I also now have field guides to whales and dolphins, flowers, shrubs, and trees, and geographical formations. My husband, I think, has decided to become a rock collector. While we’ll probably pass on any new music purchases this year from the island, we have restocked our pantry with jams, spreads, and syrups made from native berries and purchased at Dark Tickle.

Nurse Bennett. Sir Wilfred Grenfell. Viking settlement at L’Anse Aux Meadows. Yes, we also hit the tourist spots. And enjoyed them. But the majority of our photos are from our drives and hikes. And our favorite memory is from a trail in the little town of Englee, where we saw whales eating in a cove. There’s something to be said for the unbeaten path.

If all these adventures weren’t enough, on our return drive from the Northern Peninsula, we saw yet another wild animal. While writing this post, I pulled out my camera to verify the name of a place. As I flicked through photos, my husband called out, “Coyote!” The coyote was apparently standing in the middle of the left lane. In the second which it took me to look up, it had already retreated to the side of the road. My husband dug for his camera in the back seat. I switched from viewing mode and snapped a photo. And then the coyote was gone. A perfect end to our visit to The Northern Peninsula.

If you’d like to know more about my vacation in Newfoundland, visit my blog over the summer. For the next few weeks, my reviews will focus on Newfoundland picture books and my memes will feature photos from Newfoundland. Return often!

That’s my week. What about yours?
