School Wins Author Visit!

Posted on: August 6, 2013

JanBrettJan Brett holds a contest that gives schools the chance to win a visit from her for the day. In case you don’t know, Jan Brett is a bestselling author and illustrator of more than 30 children’s books. Brett has been running the contest now for over ten years. To win, a school has to enter the most “likes” on Facebook.

This week, my news report is from 2012, but is also about my hometown. When Woodland Primary School teacher, Maureen Hiscock, visited Brett’s website to gather ideas for a classroom project, she learned about a Brett’s contest. The school’s over four hundred students and their parents got involved in a campaign to boost those Facebook “likes” and their chances to win. They went door to door, distributed flyers, and set up voting stations at the local mall with laptops so that people could vote on the spot.

According to CTV News, a week before the contest ended Brett emailed to say, “Whatever you’re doing, keep doing it, because we’re looking into flights to Newfoundland.” In 2012, Woodland Primary Elementary became the first school outside the United States to win Brett’s online contest. Go Newfoundland!
