Snapshot Meme: Feline Stomatisis

Posted on: January 31, 2014

Saturday Snapshot invites bloggers to share photos. Last week, I wrote that my husband and I introduced a new cat into our home about a month ago. Shortly after we adopted Cinder, she was recently diagnosed as having stomatitis.

Basically, a cat’s immune system overreacts to plaque and causes inflammation in the mouth. It’s a painful disease, where the only cure is removal of the teeth. It doesn’t have a known cause.

On Wednesday, we took Cinder to a vet dental specialist for surgery. Despite hopes that we could keep her incisors and all of her canines, she was only able to keep her two bottom canines. Cinder’s initial reaction when we got home seemed to be one of the shock. She kept crying all evening and so I held her, stroked her, and consoled her.

For the next week, Cinder needs to wear a cone to keep her from pawing at the stitches in her mouth. Now that we’ve bought her a soft one to replace the hard one given to us by the vet, she seems more adjusted. Cinder is finally sleeping, eating half her regular portions of food, drinking tuna water, and being slightly active.

That’s sad, poor thing, but at least she’s got you guys to take good care of her. I’m sure she’ll do fine. Tough adjustment though. Good luck with her recovery!

The soft cone has made all the difference in Cinder’s recovery. Because she’ll tolerate it, her life returned pretty much to normal with it. The only exception is Cinder needs to eat pates until the end of the month.

Poor thing. Can she only eat food that she can lick up now?

Cinder is allowed only soft food while her mouth heals, which could take up to a month. After that, she’ll be able eat all normal foods again including dry kibble. I’m not sure how, but that’s what we’ve been told. 🙂 Apparently, their teeth aren’t terribly essential.

Books can take connect us with strangers, take us to unique places, and introduce us to new ideas. They can also offer hope in a chaotic world. And so I must share what I read!
