Set in the future when books outlawed and even thinking is discouraged, Farenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury is the story of a fireman who is troubled because is job is not to put out fires but to start them. The winner of many literary awards, Farenheit 451 is an established dystopian classic. In this post, rather than present a literary analysis, I’ll focus on how Bradbury came to write this short masterpiece and two main themes it covers.

In my edition of Farenheit 451, the first thirty pages are taken up with a foreword and an introduction, both by Bradbury himself. In each, he shares the origins of this relatively short novel. Apparently, the theme of books being burning had long been on his mind. Bradbury states that he had written numerous tales with belabored warnings on the theme, before specifically listing five unpublished ones that he led to The Pedestrian. This latter, inspired by an encounter with a policeman who questioned why Bradbury and a friend were out walking the streets, led to a second walk as well as a 25,000 word novella entitled The Fireman. Bradbury also credits various world events, both current and historical: Hitler torching books, Stalin and his match people, Salem witch trial, and the triple burnings of the Alexandrian library.

How did his 25,00 word novella grow to double its size and gain publication? Apparently, Ian Ballantine started a hard and soft publication venture and saw in Farenheit 451 the makings of a proper novel, if Bradbury could add 25,000 more words. Bradbury then faced a dilemma, in being a “passionate not intellectual writer” or a writer who needed to write his story an emotional blaze. In his youth, he had spent hours in libraries, taken notes about firehouses, and seen his grandmother’s house on fire. All of these memories played on his mind as, with the roughest of outlines, he wrote Farenheit 451 in nine days. Wow.

In researching Bradbury’s background, two themes were regularly cited for Farenheit 451. Naturally, the first is that of censorship. Although Bradbury later distanced himself from this claim, Bradbury clearly loved books and libraries. He even claimed to have graduated from libraries, having spent ten years there, two or three days a week, after his high school graduation. His characters also bear out the claim with their speeches, especially a lengthy one by Beatty who visits Montag who has taken a sick day. To summarize, Beatty talks about how society as a whole tried not to step on the toes of any individual group. Doing so led to books and magazines becoming a “nice blend of vanilla tapioca”. In time, books stopped selling, except for comics and sex confessions. So far, this doesn’t actually seem like a rant against censorship. Eventually though, Beatty explains, the job of firemen was to ensure that everyone remained equal. “A book is a loaded gun in the house next door.” As such, firemen were provided the job of burning books to ensure that ideas don’t upset anyone and that everyone remains happy.

Another theme cited is that of the negative impact of television. Although Bradbury himself turned some of his writings into screenplays and shows, he apparently disliked this medium. One can also see this theme evident in Bradbury’s characters, especially in the interactions between Montag and his wife. She seems obsessed with her TV parlor, to the point that the programs feel more real to her than the world around her. Mildred forgets until four days after the fact that the neighborhood girl died. She also prefers to watch her shows than talk to Montag about when their marriage started, whether the two of them are truly happy, or why books are wrong. The theme is also evident in the character of Clarisse, who is considered a troublemaker because she likes to notice the grass, the flowers, the moon, and to ask questions about history, instead of watching television.

Since first encountering Bradbury in my youth, I have appreciated him for his style and ideas. My husband is also a longtime fan. We have many of Bradbury’s writings, with one of my favorites continuing to be Farenheit 451. More than anything, what strikes me is how timely this book written in the 1950’s remains with its high praise of ideas and books and regards to cautionary comments on technology. In our fast-paced society, Farenheit 451 reminds one not only to take time to read but to also simply stop to observe, listen, and experience the world in which we live.

Claiming that his work was based on the fantastical and unreal, Ray Bradbury was an American fantasy and horror author who rejected being categorized as a science fiction author. His more than five hundred published works –short stories, novels, plays, screenplays, television scripts, and verse—are considered to exemplify the American imagination at its most creative. In recognition of his stature in the world of literature, Bradbury was awarded the National Book Foundation’s 2000 Medal for Distinguished Contribution to American Letters and the National Medal of Arts in 2004. He is remembered for several popular works, including The Martian Chronicles and Something Wicked This Way Comes. Tomorrow I’ll review his perhaps best-known novel: Fahrenheit 451. RayBradburyEARLY LIFE

Born August, 1920, in Illinois, Bradbury was the son of Leonard Spaulding Bradbury, a lineman for power and telephone utilities, and Ester Moberg Bradbury, a Swedish immigrant. According to Biography, he enjoyed a relatively idyllic childhood, which he later incorporated into several semi-autobiographical novels and short stories.

An non-athletic child who suffered from bad dreams, he relished the tales of the Brothers Grimm and the Oz stories of L. Frank Baum, which his mother read to him.  An aunt took him to his first stage plays, dressed him in monster costumes for Halloween, and introduced him to Poe’s stories. Along the way, Bradbury also discovered the science fiction pulps and began collecting the comic-strip adventures of Buck Rogers and Flash Gordon.

New York Times states that the impetus for Bradbury to become a writer was supplied by a carnival magician named Mr. Electrico, who engaged the twelve-year-old Bradbury in a conversation that touched on immortality. Biography  notes that Bradbury later said that he made the decision to write in hopes of emulating his heroes, by “living forever” through his fiction.

In 1934, the family moved to Los Angeles. There, Bradbury became a movie buff, sneaking into theaters as often as nine times a week by his count. He also participated in his school’s drama club and occasionally even befriended Hollywood celebrities. New York Times notes that a high school English teacher and the professional writers whom he met at the Los Angeles chapter of the Science Fiction League encouraged Bradbury in his lifelong routine of pounding out at least a thousand words a day on his typewriter. Biography reports that his first official pay as a writer came for contributing a joke to George Burns’s Burns & Allen Show.

After graduation from high school in 1938, not being able to afford college, Bradbury instead visited the local library instead. This decision impacted him for the rest of his life. Biography quotes Bradbury as declaring, “Libraries raised me. I believe in libraries because most students don’t have any money. When I graduated from high school, it was during the Depression, and we had no money. I couldn’t go to college, so I went to the library three days a week for 10 years.”

Bradbury went so far as to attribute his success as a writer to his never having gone to college and paid homage to libraries in 1971 in the essay, “How Instead of Being Educated in College, I Was Graduated From Libraries.”

YOUNG ADULT LIFE

In 1938, the same year he graduated, Bradbury published his first short story in a fan magazine. The next year, he published four issues of his own fan magazine. Nearly every piece in the magazine was written by Bradbury himself, contends Biography, sharing that Bradbury used a variety of pseudonyms to try to hide the fact that the magazine was a virtual one-man show. “I was still years away from writing my first good short story, but I could see my future. I knew where I wanted to go.”

Just before the United States entered World War II, Bradbury sold his first professional piece, a story called “Pendulum”. Ruled ineligible for military service by his local draft board because of his vision problems, Bradbury became a full-time writer by early 1943.

His next publication success came in 1947 with the short story “Homecoming,” narrated by a boy who feels like an outsider at a family reunion of witches, vampires and werewolves because he lacks supernatural powers. New York Times records how The story, plucked from the pile of unsolicited manuscripts at Mademoiselle by an editor named Truman Capote, earned Mr. Bradbury an O. Henry Award as one of the best American short stories of the year.  Along with 26 other stories in a similar vein, “Homecoming” appeared in Bradbury’s first book, “Dark Carnival,” published by a small specialty press that same year.

1947 was a meaningful year for Bradbury in other ways too. He married Marguerite McClure, whom he met while she was working as a clerk at a bookstore. She served as the breadwinner in the early days of their marriage, supporting Bradbury while he worked on his writing for little to no pay. The couple had four daughters.

ADULT LIFE

Three year later, Bradbury published his first major work, The Martian Chronicles. While taken by many to be a work of science fiction, Bradbury himself considered it to be fantasy. Biography provides this quote: “I don’t write science fiction. Science fiction is a depiction of the real. Fantasy is a depiction of the unreal. So Martian Chronicles is not science fiction, it’s fantasy. It couldn’t happen, you see?” According to New York Times, critics who those days dismissed science fiction as adolescent prattle, instead praised Chronicles as being stylishly written morality tales set in a future that seemed just around the corner.

New York Times also notes that the audience for science fiction at the time, published mostly in pulp magazines, was small and insignificant. Therefore, Bradbury looked to a larger audience: the readers of mass-circulation magazines like Mademoiselle and The Saturday Evening Post. These readers had no patience for the technical jargon of the science fiction pulps and so he eliminated the jargon.

One of Bradbury’s best-known work, Fahrenheit 451, published in 1953, became an instant classic in the era of McCarthyism for its exploration of themes of censorship and conformity. In 2007, Bradbury himself disputed that censorship was the main theme of Fahrenheit 451Biography quotes him as instead explaining the book as a story about how television drives away interest in reading: “Television gives you the dates of Napoleon, but not who he was.”

Famously prolific, Bradbury wrote for several hours every day throughout his entire life, allowing him to publish over five hundred published works. Despite a distaste for television, Bradbury advocated for film adaptations of his work. Television and comic book adaptations of Bradbury’s short stories began to appear in 1951, introducing him to a wider audience. Decades later, In 1986, Bradbury developed his own HBO television series, “Ray Bradbury Theater,” a cable series which allowed him to produce adaptations of his short stories.

Bradbury won many honors and awards throughout his life with, according to Biography, one of favorites that of being named “ideas consultant” for the United States Pavilion at the 1964 World’s Fair. “Can you imagine how excited I was?” he later said about the honor. “I’m changing lives, and that’s the thing. If you can build a good museum, if you can make a good film, if you can build a good world’s fair, if you can build a good mall, you’re changing the future. You’re influencing people…. That’s my function, and it should be the function of every science fiction writer around. To offer hope. To name the problem and then offer the solution. And I do, all the time.”

While Bradbury championed the space program as an adventure that humanity dared not shirk, he himself apparently was content to restrict his own adventures to the realm of imagination. He lived in the same house in Los Angeles for more than 5o years, rearing four daughters with his wife. For many years, reveals New York Times, Bradbury he refused to travel by plane, preferring trains, and he never learned to drive.

Though he preferred the sedentary writing life, Bradbury was not reclusive. He developed a flair for public speaking and was widely sought after on the national lecture circuit. There he talked about his struggle to reconcile his mixed feelings about modern life, a theme that animated much of his fiction and won him a large and sympathetic audience. And he talked about the future, describing how it both attracted and repelled him, leaving him filled with apprehension and hope.

Bradbury wrote well into his 80s, dictating for three hours at a time to one of his daughters, who would transcribe his words to the page. Though he curtailed much of his traveling and public appearances in his senior years, he did grant several interviews as well as help raise funds for his local library.

In 2007, Bradbury received a special citation from the Pulitzer board for his “distinguished, prolific and deeply influential career as an unmatched author of science fiction and fantasy.” In his final years, Bradbury felt content about his place in the annals of science fiction history, having achieved his childhood ambition of living forever through his work. He died in Los Angeles on June 5, 2012, at the age of 91. An inspiration to countless, Bradbury’s works will be remembered for decades to come.
